Fickle Polls

So. We read that some 7-in-10 of those polled by CNN say that Trump’s first address to Congress made them feel optimistic about the direction of the US.

It would be terribly easy simply to say, huh, so that’s what happens when you spend 40 days lowering expectations? Easy. And dangerous.

Trump has spent 40 days in office offering a full frontal demonstration of shock-and-awe Presidency. As a consequence of which, prior to this speech, his approval rating was in the forties.

He makes one speech. which was essentially the same as his Inaugural Address, without the red meat. And 70% of the population think we’re heading in the right direction.

If Democrats ain’t getting out of the ivory towers, and truly beginning to ask why the f**k 70% of Americans feel good about what Trump is offering, then we are doomed.

This isn’t media coverage. Or the Russkies. Or Hillary. Or Breitbart. Or one of the thousand excuses Democrats continue to advance so as not to change.

This isn’t Trump’s smile, his hair, his Ivanka scent-for-men or his having an especially good night.

This is the American people, in grotesquely large numbers, saying they like what Trump is promising. Notwithstanding all the marches, protests, petitions, town halls and text messages.

For Democrats to offer the same goods, in much the same package (cough, cough, sneeze, splutter, Tom Perez) ain’t gonna hack it. Nor is any kind of throwback to the past.

Democrats need root and branch rethinking of policies, campaigning and candidates on offer, if we are to have any chance of dislodging Trump.
